ACCESS Distance Learning grants students a chance to earn a high school diploma using the internet. The plan blends intense, interactive videoconferencing with the technical infrastructure to provide online courses through a statewide networking.

About ACCESS Distance Learning
The Alabama ACCESS Distance Learning Initiative was introduced on November 1, 2004. The program was designed to offer an infrastructure to deliver equitable, high quality learning chances for all residents of Alabama. Under the Distance Learning program, Alabama public high school students have gain access to advanced diploma and remedial lessons, and a broad range of elective options not offered in any one school.
ACCESS Distance Learning Certification
ACCESS Distance Learning is certified by the Alabama Department of Education.
ACCESS Distance Learning Programs
The ACCESS program takes two kinds: Web-Based Instruction (WBI), and Interactive Video-Conferencing Instruction (VCI).
Web-based courses are a synchronous, and use multimedia materials and an e-teacher. Participating Alabama state schools may provide these courses at any time during the normal school day. In these courses, students work independently at computers during the school day, and the e-teachers grade assignments, check e-mails, and send correspondence to students at night.
ACCESS Distance Learning Interactional Video-Conferencing lessons are synchronous courses taught at a selected time. These courses consist of real-time instruction with two-way audio and video, coached by a qualified e-teacher. Students enrolled in these courses get instruction at a distance from a teacher who is actively teaching the same class to students at a real place.
