Access to midwifery. The total increase worth of the arrangement is 5.5% during its term. It involves a limited payment increase together with $1.6 million in investments which will grow and support the field, and boost access to midwifery care all over the province. In addition, a $200,000 allotment has been set up to enhance services which midwives will deliver during the term of the arrangement. Discussion on what these broadened services will be are yet in basic phases, however may include collective care in rural areas, and other recommendations from midwives, the ministry and other partners in the health care program.

There are 260 registered midwives in B.C., of which about 200 midwives are practising.

In 2013-14, registered midwives performed a role in almost 8,600 births or over 18% of the total figure of births in B.C.

In 2013-14, midwives aided around 35 births each on average.

Registered midwives are exceptionally trained, educated and regulated experts who are specialists in low-risk pregnancy, birth and postnatal attention.

Registered midwives practice in clinics, hospitals and homes and offer 24/7 service. Their service is thoroughly covered by the Medical Services program.

Midwives are certified to handle normal pregnancies, deliveries and postpartum care.

Midwives are licensed  and regulated by the College of Midwives of British Columbia (CMBC) based on the BC Health Professions Act.

The UBC midwifery degree course is a four-year undergraduate degree program set up in 2002. It was broadened in 2012 to increase the number of seats in the course from 10 to 20. Clear here for more information.
